I can’t play a note of music.  All my siblings were in the high school marching band.  My dad insisted we all take piano lessons when we were children.  But music was not destined to be one of my creative talents.  Yet somehow, more than a beautiful photograph, more than an evocative poem, more than a dramatic sculpture, music moves my soul.

Recently, I attended a memorial service for a dear friend.  As the first notes of music were played, I could feel my heart tremble.  This song brought all my feelings right to the raw surface.  It was not a typical song for such an occasion, but was a song I had always loved.  Something about the acoustic presentation, given by three young men, just seemed to touch on the gamut of emotions I was experiencing.

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” — Red Auerbach

We all have particular songs that immediately take us back to certain times in our lives.  Be it a childhood song, a holiday ditty, a heavy rock ballad from college.  Like the smell of your mother’s signature dish, music helps us create life-long memories.

There was a time where I was really dedicated to my music library.  I’ll even date myself and admit that I still have the mixed tapes I made in my youth.  And while the digital age may make it easy to create your own soundtrack, I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never made a single playlist.  In fact, we haven’t purchased any new music in many years.

Somehow when my children came along, my music disappeared.  Maybe it was the necessary quiet of achieving naptime, or trying to hear what my 7-year-old has to say from the back of the van, but it seems that the melody, and probably a lot of harmony, has been missing from my days.

So I’m working on turning on the radio, getting out those old CDs, maybe even those mixed tapes (if I can find something to play them on!).  I’ve really enjoyed using websites like Pandora and Last.fm, where I can input a couple of artists I enjoy, and the site suggests others I’d like.  And I think it is time I finally buy some new tunes.

What do you do to make sure music is part of your everyday life?  Is there a website or technology that works best in your busy life?  Make me feel better … how long has it been since you brought a new song home?

I love music! I love to sing my favorite songs in the car. I sometimes think people are laughing at me driving down the road jamming out & singing. I very rarely get into the car without turning on the radio or popping in a favorite CD. At the moment ZBB’s new CD is on replay in my car. I can’t get enough of it. I finally got my first I-pod for my 30th b-day in April & I LOVE it! All of this being said, I don’t have children yet so I can still listen to whenever I want to. I always have the stero loud when I’m cleaning the house, well dancing/singing/cleaning. haha! It is definitely good for the soul!

I let music go for a while too – with 7 kids and all the busyness it kinda seemed like “just another noise” in my head. But then I discovered Pandora.com. I have created some stations on Pandora that generally play music that suits my mood, and I have also gotten to hear some new music that I might have missed. I highly recommend Pandora.

I love to shower, groom and dress while listening to music. I usually just go with the radio so I can be surprised and groove with whatever is playing. I also like to have the VH1 music countdown playing on the TV on weekend mornings. It’s a great way to stay up on what’s popular now. Oddly enough, I don’t enjoy listening to music while on the computer. I think it’s a case of being overly stimulated then. Here’s to the tunes and all the joy they bring. :)

    Dear Amy,
So true. There are certain tunes that bring the most poignant moments of my life to mine– moments when I was very in-tune to the music of the time. One reason to include music in your life would be that it helps implant the moments of the day in your heart and mind. I want the precious memories of NOW to stay with me as much as… as watching my daddy slapping the steering wheel in the rhythm of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody… giggling at the sight of my baby brother falling asleep once again to the magic tune of Joe Scrugg’s Baby Busy Box band… Silly dancing with my sister to Shania Twain’s Feel Like A Woman… Besottedly listening over and over to the mixed playlist CD my first boyfriend made just for me…

Without music I might forget these things. Instead of the memory coming solidly back, crystal clear as the melody and beat of the respective tune involved.

I love many different kinds of music so I try to play many kinds for my children. I try to make it part of everyday life. Pandora.com is my musical vice… soundtracks are my favorite albums because of their tendency to feature many kinds of music.

Thanks for the reminders of music’s importance.
    Love,
    Raimie

I spend most of my workday at my computer, so I have my iPod synced and playing almost all day long. Some days it\’s Christian Pop, sometimes Classical, many days Country – just depends on the mood of the day. But it is a VERY important part of my life, and can really influence my mood! Congrats to you for finding YOUR way to work it back into your days!!

I love music – and use to listen to it all the time. However, lately I have gotten out of the habit. I love jazz on a crisp fall day while I sip apple cider and putter around the house. I have an anthem of sorts – “happy Baby” by shaye. A great song that reflects my life right now -”if this is it for me baby – that’s just fine, I’m not looking anymore”. right now the music in my head is most likely to be “baa baa black sheep” and “Elmo’s song”. I catch myself humming while I am at work! Sometimes I catch my husband singing kids songs long after our little one is in bed. Thanks for reminding me of the importance of song and music in our lives!
