Come on in and enjoy a warm cup of cider or hot chocolate while we sit by the fireplace and chat about our organized lives. Ok! Stop laughing out loud before you spill that hot beverage all over yourself!
The cooler weather has arrived, and I am sure many of you have already plunged into those attics or closets full of bins and boxes to get out the bundles of warmer clothes. Personally, I love pulling out those cozy, cotton sweaters and soft hoodie jackets that have been hiding, nestled together awaiting their seasonal debut, along with the matching or in most cases non-matching gloves, hats, and scarves. (Note to self- get extra sets of gloves and hats when the sales start)!
Well, today, with some hesitation, I am going to show you my “before” and “after” pictures of our coat closet. It always astounds me how such a little space seems to explode overnight. Somehow, it becomes the “catch-all” closet…GROAN!!!

I knew I had to provide a suitable home for our cozy winter wear. So, I recently went into superhero gear and began purging my closet at lightning speed ( my family and friends will tell you this is nothing new for me…I am learning to sloooowww down…baby steps). Most items went into the trash, others were folded and put away, and the lonely leftovers went in the garage into bags to be transported to our local thrift store.
My advice for keeping these closets, mudrooms, or foyers free from chaos–keep one heavy and one light jacket per family member (unless you are the Brady Bunch) hung by your front door for easy access. I plan on keeping a basket nearby to hold all of those gloves and hats too. Whew! So, here is a peek at my coat closet.

Now, I can comfortably say, “Come join me by the fireplace and let’s chat about our organized lives… just don’t go upstairs to the kids’ rooms! ”

Thea you brave girl showing off your closet! I can safely say here in CA we really only have coats, the mittens and scarves are accessories ;) What a great reminder for us to keep up our closet space! I know I feel so much calmer when I’m able to find something right away. Thanks girl!
Winter is well on it\’s way here in Michigan. I have yet to tackle the hall closet. Although I have pulled out the winter coats, hat, gloves and things. I just need to clear out our summer gear. Thanks for the pep talk.
What if you ARE the Brady Bunch? Got any tips for a mama of 5?
Great job on the closet! I hang a clear plastic shoe organizer over the door for hats and mittens. The lower row for the youngest child and then go up from there. A pair of mittens fit nicely in one pocket and the hats will fit in one folded up. The clear pockets allow the kids to quickly find what they need.
How funny…I just reorganized my kitchens cupboards. Threw out a bunch of old cereal and recycled some cardboard. Fridge is next:) I love organizing and will be moving on to the kids toys and our closets next!
This is great! I decided to tackle our closet this summer. I told my husband to go through all his clothes and get out the items he has not worn in the last year or so and to get rid of it and I did the same. You would not believe the bags of clothes, shoes, belts, purses, etc that I had gotten rid of in our closet. I am sooo like my mother and I hang on to things “just in case” I might need this one day or “just in case” I may wear this one day. Well if that day hasn’t come in the last year or so, it was gone! I finally got up the courage to just let them go and it is amazing the feeling you get when you can actually “walk into” a “walk-in” closet! Wow! I can even lay in the floor! : )
Back in August I decided to clean out under my bathroom cabinets & threw out all of the old make-up (and hair products) that for some reason I have kept (some of it for years!), because I tried it & didn’t like the color or I thought I’d use it for special occasions, etc. I don’t wear much make-up anyway so the fact that I had enough to fill almost and entire grocery bag… INSANE! I do feel much better now & have kept it organized since August. YAY!
Oh, Ladies! It does my heart good to hear such wonderful ideas and incredible productivity!. Isn’t it great to purge the clutter?!! Go ! Go! Go!
I just purged and reorganized the hall closet as well… only I didn’t have the courage to take a before photo! LOL! It was baaaad. ;) Great ideas, Thea. And congrats on your new hardworking space ~ it looks wonderful!
Wow……whew! Great job! We are working on pulling out the winter wardrobes today too! Coat closet is next……I’m not showing mine though! LOL!! Great idea for the mitten, hat, etc storage!! Thanks!! :)
You all would DIE if you saw my hall closet right now. It is at the state of needing an extra hip push to get it shut! I guess this is my little reminder to get off my toosh and organize it. I am sure there are many pairs of shoes that don’t even fit in there right now….
Thanks for sharing the pics! I just LOVE a good purge session and organizing a space, just wish it would stay organized longer. :) Please send some of that cold weather west…it was 79 degrees here in CA today!
So jealous…We cleaned out our coat closet last week and within two days it was back to destroyed :-( I so need to think it out more..lol!
