Get creative with buttons.

t-2-of-3for christmas this last year i was given one of my most cherished gifts, a beautiful bunch of handmade push pins. my dear friend chose each button individually and crafted a gorgeous array of vintage goodies on her incredibly thoughtful (handmade) push pin “holder”. i literally gasped with excitement as i unwrapped them. they are so simple and easy-peasy to create, i went ahead and did some of my own to pass along to my sister.

ready to embark on a fun little journey of crafting? i know you are…

supplies needed

  • handful of yummy, possibly vintage buttons. (note: grandma’s attic or your local thrift store are lovely places to start looking for these!)
  • small carton of thumb tacks. you can use the nickel plated or plastic coated – doesn’t matter. just be sure it has a flat surface.
  • set of glue dots. i’d get the mini dots, its better to have to put one or two than to have one that is too big for your thumb tack. i am sure you could use good ole glue, however i have only ever done them with the dots.
  • small scrap of fabric to make your push pin holder.

    t-3-of-31

  • small piece of either foam board, or a chunk of foam – cut into your desired shape (ie: circle, square, etc).

the fun stuff

  • pretty simple actually… turn your button over, adhere the glue dot(s) to the head of your thumb tack.
  • attach your thumb tack to the back of the button and give it a tight squeeze. viola! finished.
  • to cover your foam, simply cut the fabric to the desired shape and wrap tightly around.
  • adhere the fabric to the foam with… that’s right. the glue dots.

see? relatively easy isn’t it? and what a lovely gift! i know i use mine all the time on my inspiration board.

okay now, get out there and get craftin’!

My nine year old daughter will love to make these with me for our bulletin boards!

We’ve made a photo button pushpin using the same idea. My daughter used large coat buttons and glued them on to push pins. She then cut pictures of her friends and glue them onto the front of the button. The mini sized school pictures work perfect and her friends loved it. This year she is using magnet squares instead of push pins so they can use them in their lockers.
