The Just Another Day Project.

I used to be a scrap-booker (see image above). I was a big time, never missed an expo, had an entire room dedicated to it scrapper. I loved it, and still look back on that time in my life quite fondly. As it turned out, I phased right past that love, and onto another – which I’d venture to say springs in part from my scrapbooking days.

Photography.

For me it started out in highschool with my first SLR (Canon at the time), and fast forward, ahem, quite a few years later, I have the privilege of capturing life for others through the images I take. It’s my joy and my passion. I’m lucky enough to have two pretty cute subjects right under my roof that get more than their fair share of shutters clicks each day. As much as I love this part of my life – it’s easy to get caught up in the business of it, and lose track of the reason(s) I went for it in the first place – my family. So, every so often I take a step back and remind myself. Friday was one of those days.

b

It wasn’t planned out, and it certainly didn’t take place on a special day by anyone else’s standards. To me it was special, and moreover, it was beautiful.

Something I’d wanted to do since my scrapbooking days came to life. From the moment we awoke, until tucking the little ones into bed, my trusty Nikon was by my side. I pushed those pesky photography rules out the window and simply snapped away at everything from my cup of morning tea, and our four year old entranced by his favorite cartoon on TV, to my husbands work boots as he entered the door that evening. I asked my sister to come by at various points that day to make sure I was in some of the images as well. I documented the details, and did it in a way that will forever be etched in our memories – through photographs.

c

You don’t need to be a professional photographer, or even have a fancy camera do to this. You just have to have the passion to know that regardless of how ordinary, or exciting your day may be, photo-documenting it is a gift you’re giving yourself (and loved ones) for a lifetime.

a

The challenge

(Did you see this coming?) Take my lead! Charge up your camera, tuck it away in your purse and pull it out as many times as your card (or film) will allow. Whether you work outside the home, are a mother, a wife, or any of the amazing roles you might play – committing to this project is something anyone can do. I’ve made a collage of ours (click HERE to view enlarged) and plan to print, and then mount it to foam board so the boys will have something tangible to hold and look through in the years to come. In fact, what a great project to take on yearly.

For it is in the tiniest of moments that memories are made.

Will you take the challenge? I’d love to hear about your “just another day project”. In fact, what a great idea for this Friday’s Get Your Creative On! ; )

This is a great idea and your photos are beautiful! I’ve never been much of a scrapbooker, but this appeals to me more.

What a fantastic idea! I’ve been meaning to do the “at arms length” challenge and take pictures of me and my family throughout the day, so this will fit nicely :). Maybe not today though…I’m sick :).

love this idea. i’m getting more used to taking my camera everywhere i go! people stare at you kinda weird. we went camping over the weekend and we went to our favorite dinner in the area. i took pictures outside looking in, inside of the food, the kids, the hubby and his cup of coffee and hand with wedding ring. and one day i took a picture of my daughter standing at the atm taking money out of her account. just her cool plaid sneakers and her legs that showed because her jeans were rolled. some people think that’s weird. why would you take photos of THAT? cause it’s way cool. and back to camping…my son was climbing on a jungle gym and i snapped a photo of his sneakers and the torn hemming in his pants from playing so hard. a close up. so cute. thank you for your inspiration! enjoy your tuesday.

Hey Ang,
This was so cool to look thru! I’m truly inspired to do it (once we get back from NY.) BTW, I won’t be linking in to Get Your Creative On this Friday, because I won’t be around to link it. I imagine that I won’t be near a computer very much…

Thanks for sharing your beautiful images with us. Your boys are beeUtiful.

the best way to get a good picture is to take a lot of pictures.

and with today’s affordable software (adobe elements, for example), sorting and recalling photos is super-easy, no matter how many you have taken.

15 angie May 26, 2009 at 2:23 pm

Rana,
Hope you are able to do this sometime soon! If I hadn’t have sold all of my “supplies” I might be tempted to scrap this :)
