This week I will meet my dear circle of local photographer-girlfriends (my “kindred spirits”, as Anne of Green Gables would call them!), for breakfast and for some much-deserved girl time.  There will be plenty hugs, a little shop-talk, oodles of laughter, and quite the stream of tears, I’m certain.  You see, one of our sweet friends will be leaving us, moving across the country to follow a dream and to be near family.

My heart leaps with excitement for her, her husband, and their twin boys, and the adventure on which they are about to embark.  I applaud her family’s strength and determination, and their courage to step out and make such a bold move ~ to follow a lifelong dream no matter where it takes them!  My heart is truly overjoyed for her!

But that same heart also breaks into a thousand little pieces for myself and for the rest of the girls here who will miss her so when she leaves.  Thankfully, she’s promised to journey back to Tampa from time to time for visits, and we can definitely fly out west to let her give us the official tour of Seattle!  I will still get to follow her amazing blog and read about her new adventures, watch her boys grow up in their new surroundings, and revel in the beauty she finds in families and children or in ordinary day-to-day things when she’s behind that lens.

Yes, we’ll always stay connected.  But it still hurts to see her go!

I’ll miss her always-smiling eyes and her genuine, friendly laugh.  I love her way of unknowingly opening up your heart when it would just as soon stay closed.  I’m in awe of her boundless energy and enthusiasm and her amazing way with kids, including my own!  She’s infamous for her divine adoration of Panera Bread breakfast sandwiches, animals in need of rescue, and recycling.  ;)  I’m forever touched by her gentle, giving spirit and her belief in the true goodness in all people.  And most of all, I’ll miss her very real way of connecting her heart to yours in an instant.  I’m sure that we’ve begun a friendship that will certainly last longer than a fateful workshop weekend, more than a handful of years on the calendar, and certainly more than a couple thousand miles.

As women, I feel it’s so important for us to have close friends to share in our journey through life.  Friends who listen when you need an empathetic ear, and who feel comfortable in coming to you when they need your shoulder as well.  Someone who lifts your spirits when you need to get back up, and settles you when you need to take it down a notch (or three).  ;)  A girlfriend who laughs with you, cries with you, knows when to give advice and when to withhold it. A girl after your own heart who will be glad to share a pint of ice cream or the last slice of cheesecake with you.  An ever-on-call heart.  I’m lucky to have found a few of these rare kindred spirits throughout my life.  Well, maybe not lucky. . . I think blessed is more like it.

Do you have extra-special friends in your life?  Women who are true gems and whom you can’t imagine your life without?  Please do share your stories with us here, and then most importantly, call that same friend and let her know how much she is cherished.  I promise to do the same.

I am totally blessed. Even more than my architecture degree, she is the best thing that came of my time at uni. Fatefully, I sat next to her in the front row on our very first day of orientation, and we’ve been inseperable ever since. We even shared our wedding day together last year in a double ceremony! I am letting her know how much she is cherished as I sit with her this week to keep her company, and help with model making as she finishes the marathon that is an architectural thesis. I am so very lucky.

I run an in home daycare and several years ago I was watching a little girl that lived down the street. The mom has since become a SAHM, but the two of us have become such great friends. We have two little boys that are the same age and we also have other children that are not the same age. We are there for each other when we need advice or to vent our frustrations and feeling about something. I truly feel that my life is better because she is in it. I hope that everyone has a friend in their life.

I was blessed to spend this past weekend with a kindred spirit of mine. She lives over 7 hours away from me and life blessed me with opportunities to take time out of my schedule to visit with her. It is always an amazing time. I love feeling so safe with my kindred spirits. One of my most favorite quotes in the world sums up how I feel about my true girlfriends:

“Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away.”

Now I don\’t want to complain because I am more than grateful to have more than one of these kindred spirits in my life… but I bet it sure is awesome to have your kindred spirits also be photographers. :) I\’d love to have that, too!

  • Trish

One of my most favorite people in the whole world is a kindred spirit. She is my sister… and she wrote this post. ;) Love you, Stace.

Courtney, what an amazing story!! Blessed indeed.

Maggie, that’s fantastic about your shared wedding day. I’ll bet it was gorgeous!

Erin, isn’t it wonderful that you’ve stayed friends even though your circumstances have changed. Her coming to your daycare for a season was just the beginning, I’m certain.

Kristie, huge hugs to you my dear. I love you to pieces and I am looking forward to Wednesday, although it will be oh-so-bittersweet! But yay for Panera, lol! ;) xoxo

Trish, you and Amy are my ORIGINAL kindred spirits, and have been since the day you were born. I was so blessed to grow up with two best friends in my very own house, two "built-in playmates" for the rest of my life! I love you both to the moon and back and am so thankful that we’ve remained close ~ no matter where we are! *MUAH*

Liz, although I cherish all of my friends, it IS nice to have amazingly talented photographers as friends as well! Handy too. ;)

Jaime… let’s keep her here, wanna start formulating a plan?? ;)
Thank you ladies for sharing your stories! Keep ‘em coming! These are wonderful.

I feel very blessed that my very best friend came into my life. I can never remember a time when I have been so close to a girlfriend. She is family. We met in 2006 through our husbands that worked together at the time. We hit it off instantly! We discovered that we both had a love of photography and it is because of each other that we had the courage to start our photography business together last year. It has been an amazing. I love her very much and I\’m so glad our paths came together.

What a wonderful story Stacey and reminder to us all. I am blessed with many kindred spirits all in my life to serve a different purpose. Some are the “call when in labor” friends, others are the “can’t get out of bed, need a good shoulder to cry on” friends, then there are the “my kids are making me crazy please help!” friends – and then some that fit all the molds! :)

I need to be sure that in my own crazy, busy world I am making time for them – to cherish and let them know how much they mean to me…

I was just reading the post on FB and have been in tears thinking of my dear friend Tammy. She beat me to the comment section! As she mentioned, I cannot imagine my life without her. She has truly been an angel for me. She has seen me in the best of times and sadly some of the worst of times. She definitely knows what to say and when to say it. Sometimes all I need to do is vent and she is there to listen : ) We have definitely laughed together and cried together and it’s been a great journey over the past few years. I’m so glad we found each other and decided to go after our passion together. It has definitely been a hard road to go down trying to start a business that once was just a hobby but we jumped in both feet first and it has been amazing! I couldn’t imagine doing this without her. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. I love you T and thanks for being who you are! : ) I really needed this post today. Thanks for sharing!

Most of my kindred spirits now live lives apart from mine, geographically. Even though the years have come and gone, I still feel as though I could pick up the phone or show up on their doorstep and continue our friendship where we left off. For these women, I am forever grateful. As of recently, I do not have a kindred spirit nearby…yet I have met a dear woman at work whom I think the good Lord has put in my path “for such a time as this…”. My prayer is that she would find me worthy of being HER friend. Thanks, Stacey for sharing such a sentimental post and allowing me to walk down memory lane.

Girls thank you for sharing your beautiful stories and your heartwarming tributes to your BFFs. I’ve been touched by them! (Carla and Tammy, y’all are makin’ me cry over here. LOL!)

Angie, yes there are so many types of friends. I have friends I love for different reasons, and special things I share with each of them. Thankfully everyone in this world is so different, so we have an abundance of wonderful qualities to love about each other!

Thea, I too believe God gives us friends for a reason, friends for a season, and friends for a lifetime. I’ve had all three, and they’re perfect just the same. I hope your new friendship blossoms!!
