in my own attempts to green up our life, i came across this fabulous idea from martha herself. a reusable grocery/shopping bag made out of… you guessed it: old t-shirts. not only are you helping the environment, but you’ll be recycling those old t-shirts you have lying around. recently i wrote about the dangers of plastic bags, and i have made a commitment that our family will do our best to use green bags whenever possible. this really is quite a simple project that requires very little sewing knowledge. so gather up those old t-shirts (even the kid’s ones!) and lets get started.
supplies needed
- um, do i need to say old t-shirts?
- fabric scissors
- fruit or salad bowl (med-large)
- fabric pen (or really, lets be realistic, any old pen will do)
- sewing machine, thread and needle, or fabric glue
the fun stuff
- start by laying your shirt flat on the floor or a table
- cut the sleeves off of your shirt bag on the inside of the seams, let it act as a guide for you but don’t worry about getting a perfectly even cut.
- take your medium/large bowl and place it over the top/collar. trace it with your pen, the bigger the bowl, the bigger your opening will be. cut this out.
- turn the shirt bag inside out and sew the bottom together, this will be the bottom of your bag.
- flip it back around and viola! you have a spacious and unique green bag!
what are some ways your family has tried to “be greener”?
