Who or what is your primary focus? (Weddings, portraits, commercial work, editorial, etc.)
Portraits (families, children, and babies)
Film or digital?
How long have you been shooting professionally?
About three years.
Do you shoot on-location, in-studio, or both?
Almost all of my sessions are on-location, but I have a small studio room for newborns and babies.
What drew you to photography initially?
A friend of mine had six children- the youngest three were babies when I got to know the family well. I wanted to capture every ounce of their cuteness because I loved them so much!
Who has influenced your work, style and/or approach to photography?
My style and approach is completely influenced by my own childhood. I did not feel loved growing up, so I feel this drive to capture/document love within families. I try to imagine the children I photograph looking at the photos in 30 years and how amazing it will be for them to see how much they were loved and to be able to feel and experience those emotions again.
Who or what continues to inspire you most, personally and professionally?
I am continually amazed by God.
What do you enjoy most about being a professional photographer? What do you enjoy least?
I really like seeing how every family has its own personality. I dislike answering emails, as anyone who has emailed me in the past year knows.
How would you describe your photographic style?
Relaxed and loving.
Do you have any formal training or education in photography?
What camera do you use in your work? What lens is your most used? Most fun?
5D Mark II. My main lenses are the 50mm 1.4, 28-75mm 2.8, and 135mm 2.0
RAW or JPG?
Any additional equipment or gear that you just can’t live without?
My Macbook Pro!
What program(s) do you use for post-processing? What is your favorite tip you can share with our readers regarding post-processing?
Photoshop CS5. Selective color is a great tool for reducing over-saturated colors.
Do you prefer color or black and white images? What determines how you’ll process each image (or which film you’ll use)?
I usually prefer color images. The expressions of the subjects/mood of the image determines processing for me.
Do you ever find yourself in a creative rut? How do you overcome this?
Yes- checking out art outside of the online photography community is great for inspiration.
What has been the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given regarding photography?
Getting images correct while shooting is the best- relying on Photoshop to fix images after the fact will just lead to frustration.
Tell us about your most favorite portrait session, most fun commercial assignment or dream wedding.
I don’t know that I have a favorite session- but I love sessions with “big kids” who are 5 years and older.
What is your favorite personal indulgence or treat?
I fully embrace my inner child- I love cartoons and sweet cereals.
