Ok I knew the day I saw this adorable little puppy that he was going to be high maintenance.  Little did I know just how “high maintenance”.  Good thing I love him ;-)

So last month when he started getting sick after every single dry dog food meal I knew that my life was going to get interesting.  Basically we called the vet and they said to start preparing his meals according to this formula:

  • 40% meat
  • 30% Veggies
  • 30% starch

First I had to get over the whole “seriously?  I have to now cook a meal for my dog each night too?“  I figured it would cost twice as much and be twice the pain.  After a month of making a batch of dog food every 3 days I can say it really isn’t costing us any extra and while it is a bit of a pain the ability to make a large batch and freeze each days portions for a week make it not so bad!

The good news… Spike is no longer getting sick everywhere.  The one time he did get sick I had changed the veggie to corn instead of green beans, peas or carrots.  So my guess would be his allergy is with corn.  If that is the case he may never be able to eat a dry food since most have corn.  Did I mention the dogs LOVE their new food?

It is very simple.

I take a pan and add:

  • 1 lb of  chicken, beef or turkey
  • 1can peas
  • 1can carrots
  • 1cup of brown rice (I typically make a huge batch of rice and freeze it and break a chunk off and cook/thaw it in with the cooking meat and veggies)

Once it is all cooked we throw it in some Tupperware and into the fridge.  That amount lasts us about 3 days for 2 small dogs.  I am sure if we had larger breeds this could be way more expensive.  One benefit to having little guys I guess :-)

And now that we are getting into making our dogs there food I have found that there are so many recipes out there for different dog foods!  A world I never knew existed :-)

{As with anything you feed your pet be sure to consult your vet if you are wanting to make this a full time switchover.  Some vets like you to add vitamins to your pets meal to meet your pets exact needs and ensure they are getting exactly what they need.

I love this! Talk about creative recipes :) Our 90lb dog would be quite expensive in this department, but this is so good to know should we need to make the switch. Thanks T!

When we had dogs we used to take all the pulp from the juicer. You know, when you juice veggies and fruits in the morning. I would take that and mix it with cooked oatmeal and a couple raw eggs. Our dogs LOVED it. Our vet said it was quite healthy for them to eat too!

Just looking at your recipe and was reminded of what people did when I was over seas. The butchers would sell meat for dog food. You could actually buy it in the store as well. It is good just not the pieces they can sell for human consumption. It might be a good thing to check into.
