I got a note the other day from a friend who recognized my work on a website that wasn’t my own. Indeed, it was work I was hired to shoot so she was right, but it surprised me that she could tell it was my photography before she knew for sure. Do I really have a signature style? People have said yes but I still don’t see it. I don’t have a processing trick that sets me apart like some photographers I’ve seen. I don’t have a particular portraiture style I favor. I don’t recognize a common thread that visually ties my images together at all. So what is it?

And thinking about that, I wondered that even beyond a simple style or technique, am I in fact revealing who I am through the images I take? When people visit my blog or Flickr stream do they know what kind of person I am? Have I introduced myself properly?  Am I better understood by my photographic work even beyond my words and deeds?

It’s no surprise we all focus on what matters most to us; in our hearts and in our minds as well as through our lenses. We are the documentarians of our lives and loves, family and friends. We are the keepers of memories, the note-takers, the photo-journalists, the scrapbookers, the historians. It’s just what we do. So, the question is, what do your photographs say about you? Do they reflect your passions, your loves, what is important to you?

More than anything, I hope my children will appreciate all the pictures I have taken over the years. Not just as documentation of their childhood (which is important enough) but even more, a way to remember me. I hope that my photography is another means in which they will know me and understand the kind of person I am not only as their mother but as a creative woman in this world. As I trace the images I have captured over the years, I can follow along through a visual narrative, not only my life story but all the things I want my kids to know about me. I only hope that in the end, the legacy of my photography is something that transcends me and that will be a lasting account of the truth I seek out everyday in this beautiful life of mine, and of theirs.

My aunt is known for taking every picture at a 15-degree angle. I want my kids to remember mom taking shots of what matter most. And I want to take more than cheesy grins (not that cheesy grins aren’t fun but that’s not the only picture I want of my kids).

My little girl tells me she wants to be a photographer because… \"you always have fun, Mom\" That just makes my heart swell! If nothing else, I hope others can see the joy I feel in my photographs.

Your photographs definitely stand out, and the kind of photographs you like do as well… not so much in how they look but in the feelings they evoke.
(was going to sign up for PS tonight, but just happened to see this….)

  • Maria Sayers

I just read the description of your Photo Summer e-course. It sounds like just the perfect project for the month of July!

Not here for the contest as I’m already in! But just wanted to say this pic of these 3 wonderful girls is brilliant and powerful. Love all the expressions. So strong. And this: “I hope that my photography is another means in which they will know me and understand the kind of person I am not only as their mother but as a creative woman in this world. Makes me weepy as a mother to be. “xoxx

    Tracey,
You read my mind. I just posted about this on my blog. I felt in the beginning that I was just trying to learn my camera…but slowly I am starting to develop my own style. I do not think I have totally done this yet, but I am starting to. Thanks for this post, and I would love to win a spot in your upcoming class.

  • http://www.sdanddoublee.blogspot.com Stacey Montgomery

LOVE this post!! Sometimes I think I\’m a little crazy for all the pics I take of my kids, but what you said is SO TRUE. It will be a lasting account… thank you for this!

  • Julie H

I understand what you mean about looking back at the pictures & hoping your kids will know more about you later in their lives. My mother passed away 6 years ago & my children were born after she passed. Looking back at pictures of my childhood helped to remind me of who she was as my mother & to help guide me as a mother to my children.

Funny, I have been thinking about this a lot lately — both in my photography and my blog. I’ve noticed that there are certain people whose shots I can instantly recognize before reading the credit. But I don’t think I’m there yet. Maybe I’m still learning and emulating and changing too much, or maybe I’m just to close to my own work. I hope someday soon I can look at my work as a cohesive thing. Or maybe not, maybe it is good to change. But I love what you said about your family seeing who you are — wonderful.

I am still a pro amateur and while people say they love my images, I want to get and be better. I would love to take your class so I can learn more and grow to be a better photographer!

    Tracy,
You have so spoken to my heart.
I am trying, possibly too hard, to figure out my ‘style’, instead of just enjoying my life
with my camera and showing to the world. I will think long and hard about what I read today, thank you.

    Tina Lynn

  • EBPitcher

The only style I know that I have is the “need” for headshots of people. I love faces, up-close and personal.
