This month is always bittersweet for me. October, to me,  signals the beginning of true Autumn here in Florida, and the end of our days at the beach as we know them.

I realize that, in the fall and winter, although we can still enjoy living near the sea, our skimboards and bathing suits do not get to make the trip to the Gulf with us.

I begin thinking of all our Summer photographs, and how desperately I want to preserve a little of this season with my kids, and for them.  I’d love to extend Summer just a little longer.  I just can’t bear to let some of these images go, along with the memories they hold.

Sometimes I’m guilty of “the cobbler’s children have no shoes” in a sense.  I know the importance of having photographs of my children on display, and do have my fair share on the walls.  I do take a lot of photos of my children, but sadly, far too many of those live on hard drives rather than in some tangible piece that they can look at and hold in their hands.

So this Autumn, my mission is to create a book for my children. Photographs of them, along with the stories that I want so much for them to remember.  The day they chased the great seabirds under the pier… the trip to the island when we took home a gorgeous old shell (which, surprisingly, housed a live crab).  The salty smell of the air and the soft rush of the waves.  I want them to be able to hold their summer photographs, read my stories to them about that memory or that day, and influence them on the tiniest, most special things in life.  I hope they lovingly flip through the pages themselves someday and smile, appreciating what a simple, sweet childhood they had.  The precious ways we spent our time and the possibility that each day held for them.

Especially, without a doubt, the Summer he learned to surf.

How do you use your photographs to extend your Summer into the next seasons?  Do you use them as holiday gifts?  Do you create books, make calendars, or use them in your decor?  If you would, please share your ideas in the comments.  Your ideas will be featured in a future article here on The Creative Mama!

Well now you have just given me the best idea! I can’t wait to put together our summer images into a book. I’m thinking Blurb, what do you plan to use?

Our summer was full of camping and late night BBQs with friends. I am so giddy to begin working on this project my dear.

    Love you to pieces!

Angie, yes Blurb immediately came to mind when I thought about this book. It’s going to be a very simple scrapbook of sorts, for me. And I can think of at least ten people in my family who would love to have one at Christmastime! Living so far away from family, I thought this might be a great way to share our “every day” with them.

I’d love to see your summer book too! A summer full of BBQs and camping sounds like heaven to this country girl. :)

Your pictures are stunning! I love your surfer guy. Thanks for that extra push, I had the wonderful intentions of doing a family photo book each year (my scrapbook replacement of sorts because I’m just no good at that) and well, um, they’re half-finished. Preserving is SO important, I can do it!

I made one of these this year so my boys can remember this past summer’s beach trip: http://bowerstudio.blogspot.com/2010/09/summer-in-jar.html

I also did a quick little photo book that they’ve loved looking through… just snaps from the pool, waterpark, beach etc but a great recap of our summer!

I make each of the grandchildren a small album of pics from the lake. We go nearly every weekend and do pretty much the same things but with different friends and I try to capture each memory in their albums. I decorate each page and just slide a picture in and journal. I try to get the “everyday moments”. Eating a hot dog or cupcake at the 4th of July picnic, sleeping on a boat ride, etc. Hopefully they enjoy them as much as I do making them. It’s fun to watch them grow.

I did something like this for the first time last year. After a tumultuous first year with our twins (which included their premature birth and moving cross-country twice), I put together a chronicle of that time into a photo book to give our parents for the holidays. And I cherish it for ourselves. It was a really hard year, but luckily that book helps me remember some of the really many wonderful moments.

So you CAN do it! I did while settling into a new house and chasing two 1-year-olds and getting a 6-year-old to do homework! I used Snapfish, since I already had an account with them (and a coupon!) — and it turned out pretty nice. Their templates made page layout pretty simple. But I might give blurb or another company a try this year.

ps — funny, I just received a box of all my summer prints this weekend! Now I’ve got to order enlargments!

    Hey Stacey,
It can be done! I started digital scrapbooking about my boys 2 years ago. Then this March I started a photography business & had another baby boy! I just can’t spend as much time scrapbooking as I would like, but I have made sure to instill a system where I don’t stop recording our memories.
My boys are 4 years, 3 years & 7 months. I continue to take pictures of them as much as I can. We actually left the house before 7AM this past week so I could capture them as the sun was rising over the mtn in front of our house. I then make sure to edit/add my favorite pictures to my blog and upload them to be printed. I make sure to really think about whether I wan to print a certain picture or not.
I take tons and tons of pictures, but I try to only print the ones the “give me goosebumps!” :)
I also use my blog as a means to remember funny things they say or do!
On Friday this past week, I ordered another batch of recent pictures. Most of the pictures are 5×7 inch. I then add them systematically to certain frames that are designated to hold only pictures of each on my sons.
For instance I have a 5×7 inch framed picture of my son Dusty at 10 days old. I now plan to add a picture I just took of him at 7 months on top the other picture. I will continue to add a picture on top of picture until the frame can no longer hold anymore. After that I will remove them and add them to a book I have started about each of my boys. I can use my blog to refresh my memory about a certain picture if I want to add journaling.
I love this idea because I am able to enjoy a framed picture “that gives me goosebumps” about my boys for awhile, and then I can add another one when it happens again.
My boys are changing so quickly right now that I feel an urgency to stay on top of our memories.
Thank you for the inspiration, and I hope that my little system may help others.

Oh! These photos are heavenly. I live at the beach and the boy holding the skimboard is such a fabulous photo. I am so inspired!

Photobooks are one of my favorite things. I joined CherishBound just for the discount on them. I make a yearbook of the year and then do a few books of summer vacations each year. Also a school memories book for my boys. Another great photo gift and keepsake I create with summer pictures are photo collages. I am about to order a big photobook, of our first family trip to Disney World this summer. Can\’t wait to have it in my hands! And of course, the family can\’t do without calendars at Christmas, so the photos go in there as well.

I have two ideas to share. First, I made an ABC book for my daughters first birthday that I just love. Here is a link to the book http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/the-abcs-of-elle/6013311 (made with Lulu) and another to the slideshow I burned to DVD http://www.frecklephoto.com/ABC/ (she and her brothers love watching it.) I also created this collage as a visual respresentation of 2009 http://frecklephoto.com/?s=2009&searchsubmit-top=Search. I printed it 12×12\" so each photo is about an inch. I catch my kids looking at it all the time. I already started my collage for this year. Love all the great ideas here!
