A few months back, before our move, I came upon this gorgeous old window. It sat all alone in a thrift store, and when I spotted it across the room my heart began to race. Immediately I thought every other person there was eyeing it as well, and I didn’t think I could get over to it quick enough. Surely all the other people shopping wanted this diamond in the rough, right? By the time I got my hands on it, I most certainly looked like a crazy woman, having nearly sprinted over to lay claim on it.

As it turns out no one else had been drooling over it and the shop owner wanted it out of there, so I left having spent some pocket change for something I would most treasure. I thought to myself, oh I’ll take it over to our new place and find just the spot for it! Six months later, is it up? Nope it isn’t. Instead it has moved ever so slowly to various resting places; first in our room, then it moved next to our front door, and finally it is now behind the door.

This incredible old love that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on sits collecting dust (I know this because I did in fact dust it off just this morning). Why isn’t it up? Why has it relocated a handful of times without a permanent home? Most likely for the same reason so many of us don’t get out the good dishes, or use the expensive lotion.

It isn’t fair to our “stuff” and it isn’t fair to us.

Time waits for no one. Your home will never be “totally ready” and those important dinner guest might not arrive. We all have something – whether it be an old window, the good dishes, or that fancy body butter your hubbie bought you a few years back. So what, I’ll make a hole in the wall. Perhaps your little one will accidentally break a good dinner plate, and you know the lotion can be replaced. What good are these things if we allow them to sit coldly in a closet, or ahem, behind a door. We aren’t able to enjoy them.

My friends, I love my old window and I commit to having it up by the end of the week. Are you with me? What will you commit to bringing out from hiding this week?

Oh, goodness. I’ve tried to commit to getting my craft room in order for over a year. I had the room made specifically for that. It became a dumping ground when we moved in. Soon, so that I can finally have it to work in. So I know exactly what you mean.

My dad always tells this story of one of his aunts. She had all her china and linens packed away for safe-keeping and for that special occasion. One day her house was hit by a tornado and all her china and crystal and linens were destroyed. His aunt replaced most of her fine things, but from then on they were used everyday.

i would have fought you for that window! i would have raced you to that window! love it and can’t wait to see where it finds a place to call *home*

  • http://www.littlebirdcreations.blogspot.com JaimeM

I am all for using the *good* things and not hiding them away. However, I say this as I have yet to use our china!!! I do have some vintage plates though that I always use for showers and celebrations instead of paper. Gotta count for something, right?! :)

We’re moving right now, so there are many things I’d packed away while trying to sell our current house that I can’t wait to “re-discover”. However! I’m also using it as an opportunity to declutter and keep only the things I truly love. It’s such a beautiful new home, I hate to clutter it up with things we don’t love.

  • angie

bdaiss – You are absolutely right, we did the same thing before our recent move… I looked at it and asked myself “Do I love it? Does it serve a purpose?”. Sometimes the rediscovery is the best part! ;)

Lucky I wasn’t there Angie…I TOTALLY would have tackled you for it :). Lucky find hon!

I would have fought you for the window . . . to the death! I have tons of stuff that I would like to find a place for, but in a 1300 sq. ft. house occupied by 4 people, we barely have room for ourselves!! My attic really looks great, though!

Absolutley EXCELLENT post! I commit to having some pictures actually printed and hanging and out of hiding on my hard drive! :)

I would have fought you also for that window — it’s gorgeous. In the end, I would have let you have it, because my DH doesn’t love treasures like this as much as I do. Have you ever been to the Alameda Flea Market? It’s every first Sunday of the month. (I haven’t been since I had my daughter…three years!)

I’ll be using my treasured tea cup collection in a couple of weeks, when I host my sister’s Kitchen Tea. I had them all lined up on my dining room table so that I could count them. (There are 20.) I was admiring all their mis-matched, vintage beauty!!

My husband and I are currently house hunting.. so we’re just renting a friends house right now. I hate putting money and time into things that won’t last, so my windows have no curtains and I have yet to hang a picture. Maybe this week I’ll finally get my pictures printed and up on the wall so we’ll feel more at home while we’re here!

    I love your window, btw!

  • Deborah

Isn’t that the truth! Our gems should not be hidden or unused. I have used all my “special” lotions and potions. Why save them? — we deserve them and to feel good. :o) I hope the window finds a beautiful place to be enjoyed.

I am so hearing you all on this one. I have pictures that need to be put on walls. It’s been three years since we moved into our house and they still are not up. I would have fought you for that window too:)

i always get very paranoid in thrift stores when i find treasures! thanks for the challenge…I will work on bringing the thrift store doll house out of the garage and upstairs after a few coats of white paint-all the shades of neon have kept it from getting the full-welcome.

Angie…I have an old window just like that! I got it from my grandfather’s house after he passed away…it was just sitting in his basement collecting dust. I cleaned it up (just a little) and am using it as a picture frame. I have old b&w photos of my great-grandparents, my grandparents & my mom that I enlarged and matted to display in the panes of the window.

Hmmm? I have a “moving gift” that I received from a dear friend. Well, we have been in SC for 2 years and …ahem…it is still in the garage. It is glass ( 3 “dish like ” things that sit on top of each other), not sure where to put it (or IN it), but I am up for the challenge to figure it out this week! :)

Love old windows. A couple of years ago (about 2 1/2) my neighbor replaced his old windows and I was over there in a hurry before anyone else could claim his old windows… hehehe. I had (well still HAVE) many ideas for those windows. Sprayed a small one with chalkboard paint, but it bubbled, have yet to redo it. Also wanted to do the mats and photos (I’ll have to send you a photo I found on craigslist). Don’t know if I’ll get to those said projects since I’ve been spending every lasting minute with my sister and nieces and nephew that are here on vacation for the summer! Maybe I can have my niece help me!

i recently ordered a 16×24 canvas that is still sitting on the bed of the room that it should already be hanging in! i also have boxes of framed family photos waiting to be hung in the wall–for at least two months now. yes, i’ll do this THIS week!

  • http://jaimeflemingphotography.yolasite.com Jaime Fleming

ok, i promise to get my favorite photos off my hard drive and actually PRINT them and give them each a frame and a place on the wall. and while i am at it, i’ll put up the shelves i have sitting in a box behind my couch, waiting for a little something to rest upon it. it’ll take me 2 weeks though, since i will need a few days tog et the photos back from the printers. thanks for the *shove* into getting in gear!

I recently discovered your blog…. I love it!
This post was perfect….and boy did it hit home!

I bought a beautiful mirror at an antique store over a year ago. It’s sitting in the hallway downstairs right now – on the floor. I commit to hanging it in my bedroom – upstairs – by the end of the week!

    Thank you!

That’s a great window! You’re going to use it as a frame for photos, right? That’s the coolest way I’ve seen old windows used.

i have so many things that need to be put somewhere other than my guest room (a.k.a. my storage unit). this week i will be putting up the gorgeous raw silk panel that my boss gave me after work this evening! we were accidently sent 2 panels in different shades and the company told us to just keep them :)

  • Lianne

Oh, I have a few smaller windows like this one of yours, and I have photos in them!! Isn’t it funny how we all have that “treasure” just waiting for us to get the time to fine the perfect spot?
I bought a GORGEOUS uniquely shaped window on a recent trip…um, in April…and it’s just waiting on me to add the hardware to hang it!! I will hang it in it’s proper spot in the morning, I promise!
Thanks for the nudge to get those projects goin’!!
    Better go get the hammer…

  • stephanie

i have an old window that’s just propped up against a wall waiting for me to display it. not sure whether to put pics behind it or what, but it’s going up SOON! thanks for the encouragement and motivation!

  • feona

what a treat to read this after a long day at work
and this couldnt come at a better time, for me, it’s taking the time to get these things used/hung or put up
sitting in my hallway is a bunch of frames with photos and no time to put them up, or waiting for the perfect spot to put them
thanks angie for this little reminder that your home will not be “totally ready”
this week i commit to hanging these frames up…

great post! love the window too…i saw one once in a little girl’s room with a bible verse painted on it that i would love to re-create some day.

  • angie

I’m not alone! This is so encouraging to me, I hope you are all able to get follow through on your commitments, just this evening I reminded the hubbie that we need hardware to hang my “window” : ) Thanks sharing ladies!

  • http://proverbs31homekeeper.blogspot.com/ Chele

Definitely not alone on this one! :) I will have the stuff emailed to you that I promised you! That is what I will take out of hiding!! ;) LOL.

  • Rebecca

My photos of my children that are printed, but sitting in a box. My second son is 5 months old and I don’t have a single picture up of him in our whole entire house! Thank you for bringing out your window and inspiring us to do the same!

  • Kika

Ok! Ok! My commitment isn’t about getting something out on display – I commit to threading my serger! I have a wonderful machine passed down to me from my grandparents. A year ago I had a small repair done to it and it has sat, unused, since that time because I HATE THREADING IT. (I’m not good at it). So by the end of the week I’ll pull out my instruction video and get that baby threaded so I can accomplish some of my sewing projects.

I’m cracking up over this! I just stumbled across your blog. I too have a very similar window that I found in a trash heap along the side of the road in Sicily! I loved that window and made my husband take it with us in our car back up to Naples where we were living. That window sat on our deck and is now in a crate crossing the Atlantic waiting to move into our new home in the US. For months I have wondered what to do with it? Use it as a frame, but then which pictures? Just hang it? Or make some sort of hanging shelf with it?! Ack, I don’t know what to do. I can’t wait to see how yours looks!
