Shamrock Shakes

st patixks day milkshakes

My children love St. Patrick’s Day. They like to build leprechaun traps and eat green foods. We like to make Rainbow Cupcakes, and it would not be the same without Irish Potatoes. I was found these adorable paper straws at Target the other day and knew that I needed to make green milkshakes to go with them. It really amazes me sometimes how something as simple as throwing some milk and ice cream into a blender with a fun straw becomes a party and special occasion in our home. My children were delighted to have a festive milkshake as a special after school snack. I was the coolest mom on the block. For about an hour, but I’ll take what I can get.

The first time I made these, I added everything to the blender at once. Not such a good idea. The milkshakes turned grey, not the bright green I was hoping for. Now, I leave the Oreos out until the very end. It keeps the color vibrant. This recipe made 4 kid-sized milkshakes.

  • 6 scoops vanilla ice cream
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • green food coloring
  • 8 Oreos

green milkshake recipeAdd the ice cream, milk, peppermint extract, and green food coloring to the blender. Blend until smooth. Add more milk if you need to thin out the shake a little. Crush up the Oreos a little before you add them to the blender. Pulse a few times. Pour into a glass and add a fun straw!

jeri - I did this last year too! It was so good…too bad my kids really didn’t like it. But I did. Using mint chocolate chip ice cream is really good too.

Iiona V - How fun & cute are these ideas! We’ve done rainbow cupcakes
and my kiddos loved them. We’ve done rainbow cakes as well,
even more exciting :-)

Have you tried doing the rainbow cupcakes with just the cake mix
and a can of clear soda? Super simple & way easy as well. It’s just
the white cake mix, a can or two of sprite & mix together. Seperate
into 6 bowls & then mix in the colors you want, etc, etc…

Looks like we have something new to try out for this coming weekend!

Thanks for sharing :-)
