I am always trying to find fun and memorable ideas that I can do for or with my kids on the holidays. Last year I got inspired as to what to do for future Halloweens when a friend and her kids came over and made homemade root beer with dry ice. My children’s eyes were bulging out of their heads as they saw the root beer look like it was bubbling over like some sort of spooky witch’s brew. Not to mention, they loved the idea of making your own soda!  I couldn’t wait to try it out this year!

Here’s what I learned from my experience:

1. Root beer extract is hard to find. I went to 2 different grocery stores and couldn’t find it so I ended up borrowing it from a friend. You can buy it online at www.hiresbigh.com
2. Dry ice is hard to get. Some states have restrictions and laws making it difficult for stores to offer it. I ended up getting mine at Walmart in the Customer Service Dept.
3. Dry ice is cold! Do not touch it with your hands. I wore gloves after I, a-hem, “discovered” this.
4. In order to avoid clumpage or sticking to the pot, you have to stir a LOT! It may take a good 20-40 minutes for the dry ice to dissolve.
5. It’s worth all the effort just to see the look on your children’s faces (see my kids-LOL!) and to create special memories.

This photo was not staged. I wanted to capture their reaction and this is what I got. Love it!

Here’s the recipe to create your own memories (and get bulging eyeball reactions):

HOMEMADE ROOT BEER WITH DRY ICE

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 oz. of root beer extract (found in spice section of select grocery stores)
  • 1 gallon of cold water
  • 2 lbs. of dry ice (it’s best to buy the dry ice on the day you plan to use it)
  • **Use a plastic container & never put a lid on it.

Start by pouring one gallon of water in a large container (or plastic cauldron), followed by two cups of sugar and one ounce of root beer extract. Once the sugar is dissolved, add two pounds of dry ice, broken into smaller pieces. The bubbling mixture will become carbonated and ready to serve when all the dry ice has fully vaporized.  Add ice cream for a special root beer float that kids of all ages will love.

WHAT DO YOU DO ON HALLOWEEN TO CREATE SPECIAL MEMORIES FOR YOUR CHILDREN??

This looks like tons of fun Kelli!

We have been all over the place with our Halloweens, rarely even at home. Last year we drove about an hour away to my brother and sister in laws to T or T with the boys’ cousins. They have a block dedicated just to kids, streets are closed and they have so much fun!

Can’t wait to do this again.

Oh I love this idea! I’ll be on the lookout for dry ice and root beer extract for sure!

Our one must-have requirement on Halloween night is that we watch It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown after the kids come in with their full treat bags. We love dear old Linus :)

Oh so glad you had the joy of dry ice + root beer; my parents did this for me growing up & I have fun memories of it.
Pumpkin is my favorite thing the week of Halloween so we eat pumpkin waffles with buttermilk syrup & dinner in a pumpkin.
