We know it’s cold.  It’s snowy.  It’s frigid out there for a lot of our readers.  And we want you to feel nice and warm for our challenges.  We want you to look forward to them!

So this week’s challenge is going to be based on our yesterday’s Window Light Tutorial. Use it to light a portrait, and challenge yourself to try a new direction of lighting… if you normally shoot flatter, front light, then get directional and show a little shadow and moodiness with your lighting.  If your style is already moody and contrasty, try an image with a little less contrast, or maybe a backlit shot of your daughter in a window.

Stay inside, draw back those curtains and raise the blinds.  You may use the light from a window or a glass door to light your subject for this challenge.

Get creative, push yourself, and use those tips from yesterday to grow and improve your technique!

The rules are so simple:

  • You must utilize window light indoors.  Sorry, no outdoor photos this time!
  • Your entry must be a portrait: a photo of a person, or even a few people.
  • Submit your very best entry (JUST ONE) to our Flickr pool to win!
  • Deadline to enter is Monday, Jan. 17 at midnight EST.  Winner announced Jan. 19.

We’ll feature some of your most stunning submissions on Sunday, January 16, here on the blog, and announce the winner next week, Wednesday, January 19.

Wanna know what the lucky winner receives this time?

A copy of Clean Color, valued at $129 (for Photoshop) or $99 (for Elements).  Your choice.

Clean Color is a (genius, I might add) workflow video tutorial designed to show you Erin Cobb’s image editing process from beginning to end.  Two hours of Erin’s workflow, step-by-step.  Culling, editing, color issues, skin tones, touchups, sharpening, file management. It’s all inside.

One of our extremely talented authors here on The Creative Mama, Erin has just released her Clean Color tutorial this week!  And to much fanfare, I can tell you.  It’s already selling very quickly, and we don’t expect that to change anytime soon!

Thank you, Erin, for providing such a generous giveaway to our readers this week!  (And if you simply can’t wait for us to announce the winner, head on over and snag yourself a copy this week ~ Erin’s introductory pricing is just $100 for the full PS version, and $70 for the Elements version, this week only!  That’s a $29 savings!)

So what are you waiting for?  Go grab your camera and show us your best work!

*Note:  Huntsville, AL and surrounding area photographers and aspiring photographers are not eligible to win this prize, under Erin’s terms and conditions.  Should a Huntsville, AL or surrounding area photographer or aspiring photographer be chosen as the winner of this week’s challenge, he/she will be offered an alternate prize of equal monetary value.  Thank you for your understanding!

Fun! Just what I needed this week. For some reason I feel the need to be challenged to step outside of the box. I always use front lighting to really light up the eyes but I’m going to give either backlighting or sidelighting a try today! And the prize rocks!

  • Sam

Does it need to be black and white? All photos you’ve posted in both posts are… :)

Sam, no it need not be BW at all! I’m just primarily a BW photographer, so that’s what I have the most examples of here. ;) I’m sorry if that misled you.

Michelle, yes do try something you’re not used to! The point of our challenge is to push you a bit and make you grow. Sometimes our challenges will be more technical, sometimes more free and creative, but always super fun. And yes, the prize does rock, doesn’t it? ;) So does Erin.

Best of luck to you all!!

For the photo entry you mention “a few of them” and also “your very best”…..are you allowed one photo or a few? Thanks! Love your work!

  • http://www.staceywoodsphoto.com Stacey Woods

Christy, thanks so much! Per the rules above we only want to see your BEST image. Just one. ;)

And I apologize. By “a few of them” I meant a few PEOPLE. lol. “Your entry must be a portrait: a photo of a person, or even a few of them.” Again, I apologize if that wasn’t clear! I’d be happy to amend the post.

Unfortunately, multiple entries will be deleted and those participants will have to resubmit their one best image to the pool.

Thanks so much, everyone! Can’t wait to see what you create!

how fun! I was working on this today with my kiddos in the kitchen window. We had fun trying to run back to our spot in front of the window before the camera timer went off. Got some lovely pics with me and the kids. Thanks for the tips Stacey!

Not a problem, I just wanted to make sure :) Here in MN window light is GREAT (lots of snow!)! So excited for this one!

Quick question (for this and other challenges) – does the photo have to be recent, or can it be something older? I have a few window light shots I could choose from, but some are at least a year old. Thanks!!!

  • http://www.staceywoodsphoto.com Stacey Woods

Tricia, we’d prefer that you shot something new for the challenge each time, in order to push yourself and grow along with us, but we won’t disqualify older photos from the contest.

  • Tricia Ebarvia

Thanks, Stacey! That’s what I figured – for this particular challenge, it’s just chaos around here at home with the kiddos. Will definitely try to keep current as much as I can. =)
