Welcome to a new season! We are so happy to see Spring officially make its entrance to this part of the world, and it’s time to celebrate that.
Remember that tutorial I posted last week? The one where I compared a shadowy exposure to a brighter, more light-filled one? Well, this week I want to see YOUR best attempt at changing up the light you are normally comfortable with. Grow with us this season… welcome something brand new into your creative world!
For instance, if you frequently shoot dark, shadowy images (like me), then try something light and bright! Use bold pops of color, or bathe your subject in warm, evening light. Try some sunflare! Likewise, if you normally utilize flat lighting and work outdoors, then head inside and shoot your subject in some lovely back light from a large window. Or try using shadows to your advantage by showcasing shape and form with rim light.
Personally, I find that it always helps to stretch myself and just shoot differently when I get in a creative rut, or as Angie calls it, a “winter” within my own work. So I urge you to use this challenge to recharge your batteries and rejuvenate your soul! Shoot something different than your normal, just for you. Now, you don’t have to try studio lights if you’re a natural light photographer, and if you’re a studio photographer, please don’t feel like you have to go outdoors and master natural light. After all, it doesn’t have to be complicated to be a challenge. ;) Why don’t you try a different exposure… play with the light a little more… stop down or open up… break away from the familiar… treat yourself to a fresh perspective.
Here are the rules for this fresh challenge:
- Think about your usual style… and try something different in some way.
- Color or black and white, flat- or back-lighting, indoors or out… we just want to see what’s different and new for YOU!
- Submit your favorite photo (just one) to our flickr pool and please tag it with “TCMv7″ so that we can quickly sort the entries.
- Deadline to enter is Monday, March 28 at midnight Eastern Daylight Time. Winner will be announced on Wednesday, March 30.
- Images will be judged on technical merit, as well as creativity and uniqueness. Use of light will obviously be a deciding factor.
The winner of this contest is in for a treat. The photographer who stretches herself and wins this challenge will receive a $200 shopping spree, good toward any item at regular price from www.Ashe Design.com! In addition, the ladies over at Ashe Design would like everyone to try one of their templates for free! That’s right. Increase sales with each session by providing customized upgrades without spending a lot of time.
