As mama to two little ones it seems I am always on the lookout for new and creative ideas when it comes to meal time. I’ve made octopus hot dogs & cookie cutter cheese sandwiches. We do breakfast for dinner, breakfast for lunch, and yes breakfast for… breakfast. When it comes to dessert though, I get tired of the same old – same old. For our little family’s New Year celebration we did a dessert bar, and wouldn’t you know… it was a huge hit! Here is a breakdown to what ours included:
- mini graham cracker crusts
- chocolate and vanilla puddings
- whipped topping
- marshmellows
- nuts
- mini chocolate chips
- cherries
- and of course, sprinkles

The kids, grandparents, and yes, their daddy and I enjoyed these easy little yummies. The majority of the items we had on hand, so really it was a pretty inexpensive treat!
I’d love to know some of your creative ideas for dessert time – even perhaps, something with a few ahem, less calories!

We love fresh whipped cream with various berries. So yummy and somewhat healthy! Sometimes I add a bit of vanilla to the cream while whipping. (another great use for my mixer) ~drea
I’m going to sound like a complete weirdo, but I love that you did pudding! I am so not an ice cream person and never thought of pudding sundaes. Once I tried to make a basic sheet cake with frosting and allowed the kids to decorate with sprinkles. There was too much batter in the pan though and the frosting I attempted ended up like more of a chocolate bar, so none of the sprinkles stuck. Good in theory, right?
What a fun idea. We love to make pudding. I never thought of doing a mini crust. Toppings always make us happy. Thanks for sharing.
“AHHH! Sugar, sugar. da da da da, yea honey honey. da da da da , you are my candy girl..” Come on sing with me…LOL!!! Have you ever made a fruit pizza? I had one at a “girly get together” once….sugar cookie “crust” (already baked –rolled out to make a pizza crust shape), cream cheese, and any fruit you want on top ( this one had kiwi, starwberries, blueberries, and pineapple…very bright and pretty). It was actually a very nice blend. I wish I had a picture to send you…hmmm? maybe I will have to make one!
Love the idea…my kids would truly dig a dessert bar!!!
I know it’s simple, but my kids love it when I make Jell-O, they think it’s pretty much the greatest thing ever! Or I really enjoy making yougrt parfaits as a treat. Yogurt layers with fresh berries and granola in a fun glass is as much fun to eat as it is to make. Great idea on the dessert bar, I’m sure my kiddos would flip out!
Beautifu photographs, and oh my that pudding looks divine. It’s only 7.30am here and yu’ve got me hungering for pudding already!
